Salvation

FOLLOW-ALONG NOTES

INTRODUCTION

Salvation Definition:

  1. The act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc.
  2. the state of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
  3. a source, cause, or means of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.

Bible Dictionary: Easton's Bible Dictionary In the New Testament it is specially used with reference to the great deliverance from the guilt and the pollution of sin wrought out by Jesus Christ, "the great salvation" (Hebrews 2:3).

1. What are we being saved from?

A)We must realize that we need Salvation to have eternal life

Romans 3:22-23 22: Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

B)God wants to save us from Hell

2 Peter 3:7-10 7: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men 8: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance 10: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2. History of God's salvation for his people

The Jews are God's people

Deuteronomy 7:6-9 6For thou [art] an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that [are] upon the face of the earth. 7The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye [were] the fewest of all people: 8But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he [is] God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations'

What it would take to become one of God's people in the Old Testament time

Exodus 12:45-50 45A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. 46In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. 47All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. 49One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you. 50Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

Ezekiel 18:21-23 21But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: [and] not that he should return from his ways, and live?

(The Talmud is a central text of mainstream Judaism. It takes the form of a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, customs and history. The Talmud has these requirements for conversion)
Circumcision for men
Immersion in a ritual bath for both men and women
Offering a certain sacrifice in the Temple - this requirement is deferred while the Temple does not exist until such time as it may be rebuilt.

***EXAMPLE***

Ruth not returning to her home

Ruth 1:10-16 10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. 11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons; 13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me. 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. 15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law. 16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

3. New Testament Change

Jesus came to fulfill the law and not destroy it

Matthew 5:17 17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

There was a change in the New Testament because Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for us. His death burial and resurrection was the action that made the change.

Colossians 2:12-17 12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15[And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]: 17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body [is] of Christ.

***Why did Jesus give himself as a sacrifice for us?***

John 3:16-18 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-19 18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

***Jesus says that all power is given unto him in Heaven and in Earth, confirming that he has all of the power so he must be God manifested in the flesh***

***The name of the Father, Son and Holy spirit is Jesus***

Mark 16:16-17 16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

***verse 17 shows a confirmation of Jesus' words in the upper room in Acts 2***

Luke 24:47 47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

The first act of someone being saved following the Great commission

Acts 2:36-39 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do? 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.

***even those who believe in the "Trinity" and think that there are 3 separate co-equal beings in heaven should be able to see the clear command of Peter to be baptized in the name of Jesus***

This salvation is now for all people and not just for the Jews

***reference Luke 24:47***

Acts 10:27-29 27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together. 28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 29Therefore came I [unto you] without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

4. How must we be baptized?

A) We must be baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins. This is laid out plainly in the great commission and also in the carrying out of it by the deciples

I Peter 3:21 21 The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Ephesians 4:5-6 5One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.

Acts 4:12 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Colossians 3:17 17And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

**Every example of baptism in the New Testament is in the name of Jesus**

Belief is an equal part for salvation, baptism without belief is worthless

Ephesians 2:8-9 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Acts 8:35-38 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36And as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

5. What is Baptism?

The word baptize comes from the Greek word baptizo, meaning "to make whelmed, fully wet." The word sprinkle comes from the Greek word rhantizo, meaning "to render besprinkled, aspersed."

The mode of baptism in the religious world was changed in 1311 AD, to allow the sprinkling of water to substitute for baptism.

Can a person lose their salvation once they have it?

First of all, it's important to understand that God will never give up on someone who has been baptized in his name. Jesus has promised that He "will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." (Hebrews 13:5) But is it possible for someone who was once a true believer in Jesus Christ to slip away from God and miss out on heaven? We know that God will never turn from us, but He does give us the freedom to turn away from Him.

II Peter 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

John 8:31 31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;

Hebrews 3:12-14 12Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

What about the thief on the cross? Matt 27:37

The thief on the cross was granted access to Heaven before the great commission was given. It is not logical to use the argument of the thief on the cross as a reason to not be baptized if the commandment to be baptized was not given at the time he was saved.

Another question may be why the Thief on the cross is not need to offer sacrifice for repentance as required by old testament law. We know that Jesus had the power to forgive sins while He was on the earth. He forgave the sins of the paralyzed man and explained to the religious people.

Luke 5:18-25. 18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought [means] to bring him in, and to lay [him] before him. 19And when they could not find by what [way] they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with [his] couch into the midst before Jesus. 20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

Isn't it the same to say "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost" if I know that they are Jesus name?

Colossians 3:17. "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

It is the Name of Jesus that holds power, The titles hold no power. Based on that fact we should not do anything in the titles of Jesus when we could use his name instead.

Colossians 3:17 17And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

A person's power is in their name and not their Title. If a person was in jail and received a pardon from the president and instead of signing his name the president signed it "The President of the United States" the person would not be released because the president's name holds the power of his title

Are you saying anyone not baptized in Jesus name is going to hell?

We are not here to condemn anyone to hell, that is not our job. The Bible is very clear about what we must do to be saved and that is the instructions we should follow. It would be wrong to not accept the truth of the Bible's instructions for salvation because someone had not. We should never tie our reason for obtaining salvation to something someone else has or has not done. We have a personal relationship with God.

What about those who have never heard of Jesus at all?

We are challenged to preach Jesus unto all the world and we are responsible for getting the word to everyone.

**Reference the Great Commission**

Jesus will not hide himself from anyone seeking and has provided someone to do the teaching and baptizing whenever needed. (Philip and the Eunuch)

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse We are limiting the power and ability of God by thinking that God cannot reach people wherever they are.

What about baptism for the dead or baptism for babies?

Salvation is gained when someone believes and is baptized and a person who is dead can not believe and can not make the decision to follow Jesus.

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Also a baby can not make a decision to follow Jesus and does not know the difference between right and wrong. The sinless need not repent.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.
